If you are like me, I’m constantly finding things to build in my wood shop. Wood working is by far one of the most rewarding hobbies I know of and I can release a weeks worth of stress in one evening in the shop.

And searching the internet you will find a wealth of project plans free to whoever wants to download them. But sometimes there are projects I’m wanting to build that can’t be found over the net. My solution is to create my own plans from whatever research I’ve done on the subject I want to build. One of my professions is that of drafter. A drafter (used to be called draftsman) is someone who draws mechanical and architectural plans professionally, so at least I’m qualified to do the task.

One of the things I wasn’t able to find plans for was a water wheel. I own a farm and wanted to pump water from my spring to the barn without installing an electric pump. So I researched online to get all the facts, decided what size wheel would work in my spring, and started making a prototype drawing. After a few days drawing was able to come up with not only the water wheel but the invisalign cost and stand and also the pump frame to mount on the bottom of the stream.

From these drawings I was able to also build cut sheets for each part of the wheel and then start fabricating. Within a day or two I had a functional water wheel. After you build a concept drawing, you can dissect the drawing to come up with all the parts and their dimensions. That’s by far better than using the old trial and error method many attempt in the shop. And the wheel works fantastic by the way.

Children Celebrate Reading »

Thanks to Betty Davis a published author of How Jill learned to read using phonics ,and  creator and developer of the Funn with Phonics,  tutoring program hundreds of children are celebrating reading in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. Ian a five year old who has been part of the program for only two months said” Miss Betty,  I read a sign at the train station the other day and I got it right” Or Jill another five year old that breezes through Cam Jansen books and can’t wait until she reads the next mystery.  Jill brings books from home and has in the past read books to her  classmates.   or Mia who loves to read poems dictated her own poem to her dad that later is available in print. Or Allie who is now in fourth grade who read books far above grade level and who writes mysteries in intricate detail.  The children I have described above have all been part of the Funn with phonics program which teaches children how to read in a fun way. Children are taught their sounds and how to chunk word families as well as clap sing, and play board games while learning to read. Older students are taught how to read longer words by dissecting a word into smaller parts and counting how many syllables are in words. Older students are also  introduced to prefixes and suffixes

Most of us are aware of the literacy rates aof our children desperately need to be improved.  The book How Jill learned to read using phonics would be a great tool for bridging the gap and improving literacy. Teachers, parents or anyone interested in teaching, their child to read or become a better reader would benefit from this book. It  is great to see the enthusiasm of the children and the passion they possess. Their is nothing more heartwarming than to hear the words I can Read,!!!
